A thread looking at some classic Marvel covers by the great Jim Steranko, who is possibly most famous for his work on SHIELD which will naturally feature here. But we'll begin, in alphabetical order, with his 3 covers for Captain America from 1969...

Continuing, in alphabetical order, Jim Steranko's great covers for Marvel... From 1973, we have a couple of 'new' characters based on old novels, which are obviously attempts to cash in on the sci-fi/fantasy formula which was so popular at the time...first up, a character dating back to around 1908 which apparently influenced Edgar Rice Burroughs later John Carter Of Mars stories, followed by fantasy author Lin Carter's Thongor Of Lemuria... An early Steranko cover here from 1968, a joint effort where he inked over Gene Colan's pencil art ...his only work on Daredevil A couple of Doc Savage issues from 1973... Also from 1973 are his 3 covers for the Fantastic Four... The last of these 3 though is generally regarded as his worst cover ever, the result of too much editorial interference and superimposing other artists work on top of Steranko's own...

As I said earlier though, the series that Steranko is most closely associated with is Nick Fury, Agent Of SHIELD. He began his stint on the series in Strange Tales inking over Jack Kirby's pencil art in #151, before graduating to full art chores in #153, following which he also took over as writer in #155 as well as becoming the uncredited colourist. The strip remained in Strange Tales until #168 (sharing space and alternating covers with Doctor Strange) eventually graduating to it's own title which Steranko provided the first 7 covers for. Here are the covers in order, Strange Tales only featuring Fury covers every second issue. You can see Steranko's work improving from doing basic inks over Kirby's pencils in the first couple of covers through to the groundbreaking and innovatiive style which he is famed for today.
