Anyone know much about this Marvel character? I've just ordered another of the Punisher Max collections and Amazon is recommending Deadpool Max. I should probably stop reading their recommendations, but I looked and the write ups sound pretty good. Thinking I might just take a chance next time I make an order, just wondering if anyone could offer an opinion?

I'd say Deadpool is worth a serious look. He's a mercenary with various powers - including a healing factor - who does not stop talking and there's always humour in the strips. He's interacted with quite a few characters from the Marvel universe and, unlike other Marvel superheroes, he knows he is a comic character and often breaks the fourth wall.
I certainly think he's unique. I know money is tight for most people now, but I'd give his adventures a go.

I've never read anything of Deadpool myself. I know that he's a popular character in the UK because of his long-running appearance in the Panini UK reprint title Wolverine & Deadpool but that's about my limit. There's little point in picking up any copies of that title though, as you would be picking up something with loads of backstory...better to start at the beginning.

Well I've bought and read it now and to be honest I'm not quite sure what to make of it. Deadpool himself is a great character, a proper loony and great fun. The Max version didn't seem to have any superpowers as such, the healing thing was hinted at, but never actually used. Likewise he never broke the fourth wall.
The trouble is the 6 issues collected in the TPB didn't have any kind of running story. They were all stand alone stories and each was quite short, so there was no real depth or tension. The story would just be building up and then it was over. That said there was some good stories in there, they just needed to be a little longer. I'm in two minds whether to buy the next one or not.
One general point about comics, in the front and back covers there's lists of other titles starring the same character. The one for Deadpool is all over the place, he's had serveal titles of his own, he's appeared in endless different characters comics and he's been in a couple of teams. How the xxxx is a newbie supposed to make any sense of that lot?
