Anyone have any views on the mutant character Dazzler, who first appeared in Uncanny X-Men #130 (1980)? www.uncannyxmen.net/db/spotlight/showquestion.asp?faq=10&fldAuto=67This is a character that I did grow to like very much. I believe Dazzler was created as a cross-promotional deal between Casablanca Records and Marvel Comics. When I first came across the character, whilst reading an X-Men issue in the mid-80s, I did feel she may have been a gimmick character. I also wasn't that keen on the idea of a character from the music industry being a superhero, even though musical bands had appeared in comic book tales. Anyway, I was wrong. She carved out her own niche, even getting her own title at one point. Her powers are actually pretty cool and I consider them to be the most interesting powers of any mutant in the Marvel universe. I mean, what's not to like about a character who can utilize music in so many ways, all of them capable of making life difficult when she converts sound into light? What a great power, eh? The character has been around thirty one years and whilst she may not have soared to the same heights as other superheroes, she's done pretty well. I think everything about her is intriguing and exciting.

I remember Dazzler making her first appearance in X-Men #130, during the Dark Phoenix storyline by Claremont and Byrne. I thought she was just guest-star to begin with (and she was!) but she was obviously popular enough to soon earn her own title. I wasn't particularly excited about that at the time, but when I bought the first issue of her own title I was pleasantly surprised. It was well written and had good art, although I can't remember details of the story...I think John Romita Jr was the artist though; anyway I enjoyed it enough to search out future issues although distribution was patchy here. I read (and enjoyed) a number of issues but they fell by the wayside as that was the time period I stopped buying comics (due to pressure from my parents - apparently I was too old seeing as I was at college - how I wish now that I hadn't listened to them!)
