Did anybody here ever read sports comics?
I was never interested in watching sports much, was always more keen on playing them. That said, I have a passion for boxing and motorsports, and I have a mild interest in rugby league and snooker.
With comic strips, though, it was a little different. I did read Roy of the Rovers about Roy Race of Melchester Rovers. You see, such strips were just as much about soap opera and action as the football. Yes, there'd be football matches in the strips, but there'd also be kidnappings, people being shot, corruption, etc.
I used to read The Victor which ran for about thirty years, and which featured war strips and sports strips if memory serves me right.
There was a motorsports strip called Skid Solo and one called Martin's Marvellous Mini. Can't recall what comic they were in, may have been Tiger, which also featured a strip called Johnny Cougar featuring a wrestler who was a Native American.
I also remember Scorcher, a football comic. Strips included Billy's Boots, about a boy who found an old pair of boots belonging to a famous player which allowed him to play in the style of that player, and Kangaroo Kid, about an Australian football player with great ability.
The only modern sports comic I can think of is Striker, which ran from 2003 until 2005. I think it was in a newspaper before and after that. The comic wasn't bad and there were some interesting storylines - one had the wife of the club chairman (Warbury Warriors) kidnapped and the kidnappers saying they'd kill her unless Warbury lost 9-0 to Manchester United. A great comic, shame it isn't still going.
In a nutshell, I've enjoyed boxing and motorsports, along with a mild interest in snooker and rugby league. Not enjoyed watching other sports, but oddly enough, I have enjoyed reading comic strips. I don't watch football, but have read countless football strips. I guess that makes me strange.
